How to prevent sending emails to the wrong customers

Add a suppression check before every campaign: Who should definitely not receive this message?

Your target segment tells you who qualifies for the campaign.

But other customer activity can change whether that message makes sense right now.

Think about the customer who paid full-price yesterday and wakes up to a discount today.

The promo is fine. They just shouldn’t have received it.

Or the lapsed customer who gets a “We miss you!” email while waiting on support to fix their problem.

You probably know how they’ll react.

What about the existing customer who gets your “first order” offer for a product they already own?

A quick purchase-history check could’ve caught it.

Even though these customers may all technically qualify for a campaign, what happened more recently changes the context.

Focus on the customer actions that could make an email feel irrelevant, frustrating, or poorly timed.

Action Item

Open your next scheduled campaign and ask:

Who could receive this message at exactly the wrong time?

Check recent purchases, open support issues, subscription changes, and other customer activity that could conflict with the message.

Add suppression rules for the biggest conflicts you find.

✨ Takeaway: The right campaign sent to the wrong customer is still the wrong message.
